What makes our wine special
Our wine tells the story of its terroir and its sustainable cultivation. Veltliner and Riesling are rooted in the famous Kellerberg vineyard and in two exceptional sub-vineyards: the "Wunderburg," a loess-strewn, highly mineralized site, and "Küß den Pfennig," an extremely barren, stony site. This diversity of soils shapes the precise and authentic characteristics of our wines. Other top vineyards such as Hollerin, Kaiserberg, Achleiten, and Rothenberg enrich the range with unique nuances. Sustainability is particularly important to us: Living soils and a careful approach to nature ensure that our wines authentically reflect their origins. This creates enjoyment with depth and personality.

Wunderburg
Die Wunderburg ist eine Teilriede des bekannten Kellerbergs, südöstlich der Ruine Dürnstein. Sandiger Löß auf mineralischem Urgesteinsboden prägt das Bodenprofil. Dieser sandige Boden mit seiner speziellen Flora prägt diesen einzigartigen Riesling. Wunderschön ist nicht nur der Name, sondern auch mystisch und sagenumwoben-traumhaft-schön ist auch diese spezielle Lage.

Kellerberg
Der Dürnsteiner Kellerberg ist wohl einer der bekanntesten Rieden in der Wachau. Er prägt nicht nur das Landschaftsbild von Dürnstein, sondern bildet auch die Grundlage für besonders intensive und mineralische Weine. Der sandige karge Boden ist geprägt von verwitterten Gneis, dem Ausgangsgestein dieser Riede.

Klostersatz
Die Lage Klostersatz liegt zwischen Dürnstein und Oberloiben, am Fuße des Kriegerdenkmales. Der Boden ist ein Schwemm-landboden auf Donauschotter. So fruchtbar wie der Boden sind auch die Weine die aus dieser Lage hervorgehen.

Supperin
Die Supperin befindet sich vor der Stadtmauer Dürnsteins und verläuft südlich sanft abfallend bis ans Donauufer. Benannt ist diese historische Riede (1493) nach der Superiorin, der damaligen Äbtissin des Klarissinenklosters von Dürnstein. Die Reben wachsen auf feinstrukturiertem sandigen Boden und bringen elegante fruchbetonte Weine hervor.

Küss den Pfennig
Küss den Pfennig, das Herzstück des Kellerbergs, wird seinen Namen wahrhaft gerecht. Alte Rebstöcke wachsen dort auf steilen Steinterrassen, kargen Urgesteinsfelsen und bringen einzigartige finessenreiche Weine hervor. Viel Geduld, Handarbeit und Mühe müssen aufgebracht werden um den edlen Tropfen ins Glas zu bringen.



WINERY SCHMIDL
Organic quality
For us, organic farming first and foremost means improving wine quality. Organic farming also means respecting nature and the environment, thinking in terms of ecological cycles, and avoiding synthetic chemical pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers (artificial fertilizers), and genetic engineering. "Organic viticulture" is neither a fad nor a new invention; it stands for a traditional, time-honored, and natural way of dealing with crops and nature, combining traditional know-how with new scientific findings. Targeted, soil-adapted vegetation between the vines not only promotes the natural buildup of humus, but also contributes to ecological diversity. This can be illustrated by comparing a hay meadow with a diverse range of flowers to a short, trimmed garden lawn. Insects, worms, birds, and many other beneficial organisms can only be found where there is a diverse range of flowers.
Pest infestation isn't the only thing that decimates organic winemakers' yields. Avoiding chemical fertilizers also reduces harvests. The vine's yield adapts to natural conditions. On terraced vineyards, these include stony, barren, dry, and nitrogen-poor soils. The average yield is approximately 25–50% lower than that of conventional viticulture. However, a "natural yield" produces more full-bodied wines with high potential. These wines are typical of the variety and site, possess a diverse range of components, and a wealth of aromas that emphasize the terroir.

Handmade enjoyment with passion
Our wine is the result of pure handcraft: from the careful care of the vines to the harvest, where every grape is picked by hand. Even the work in the cellar is personally supervised. With passion and dedication, we create wines that promise the highest quality and unadulterated enjoyment.
Our wines are pressed and aged from single vineyards. We consciously avoid so-called "fining agents," and the fermentation of the grape juice is carried out not by "industrial yeasts," but by the site-specific microbial fauna (spontaneous fermentation). For this reason, we consciously strive to distance ourselves from the industrialization of wine by offering an authentic product. We practice viticulture and cellar management as a joyful craft that presents a new challenge every year. Thus, we let fashions and buzzwords pass us by and continue to produce a wine that reflects the soil, the climate, and the people who produce it.
